Mornings like these

I will love You, O Lord, my strength.

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliver;

My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;

My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold…

For who is God, except the Lord?

And who is a rock, except our God?

It is God who arms me with strength

And makes my way perfect.

He makes my feet like the feet of deer,

And sets me on my high places.

(Psalms 18)

It’s on mornings like today that I’m reminded of my need for His strength…or rather I realize my own weaknesses.

I can do nothing apart from Him.  This resonates with me this morning as I look out our back window.  It’s cooler today than usual and fall is setting in a bit deeper.  The wind is slightly blowing and there’s a fog lifting out of our backyard.  This seems to be what my heart feels like too.  A little cold and a little foggy.

Somedays jumping into His presence is easy.  It’s like second nature.  It’s like waking up and immediately wanting to know what He’s doing. Other mornings it takes a bit more work.  It takes putting aside a lot of random thoughts and things to do that lie ahead.  It takes realigning my heart and mind with desiring to know Him above all else; not just seek Him for answers.  Somedays my heart is cold and a bit foggy and I have to stir up the soil and brush away the fog myself.  Other mornings all I need do is ask and He comes rushing in with grace like a flood to meet me where I’m at to warm the very depths of my heart and bring trust to a day started in much uncertainty.

It is God who arms me with strength

And makes my way perfect.

Strength can be thought of in many different ways.  The strength to lift large objects.  The strength to endure for long periods of time.  The strength to resist, to push, to leap, to climb. It’s often synonymous with power. Then there is strength of mind.  Determination. Fortitude.  Strength to believe. Strength to keep going.  Strength to not give up. Strength to keep trusting and leaning on someone else.  Courage.

As Websters dictionary suggests:

Strength, power, force, might;  suggest capacity to do something. Strength is inherent

capacity to manifest energy, to endure, and resist

Power  is capacity to do work and to act. Force is the exercise of power: One has the

power to do something. He exerts force when he does it. He has sufficient strength

to complete it. Might is power or strength in a great or overwhelming

degree: the might of an army. potency. brightness, loudness, vividness, pungency.

What kind of strength do you need today?

Strength to an overwhelming degree? To endure? To resist?  To believe?  To let go?  To walk?  To jump?  Maybe you need strength to dig in your own heart and ask the hard questions or just face the one’s God’s already asking you.  Maybe you need the strength to simply give up control and believe what He’s already told you.

Whatever you need, He’s got it waiting for you and He’s making your way perfect today.
