LACK

It’s usually that thing everyone is complaining about under their breath, not spoken of openly, but if you look very far you’ll find it all around you. Lack. Behind the eyes of the man on the street corner begging for food. Inside the child who is restless in need of affirmation. You may even see it within yourself; hiding secretly in your relationships, in your constant need for approval. Behind your last car payment that was already over due. Maybe as you searched and searched for ideas for your next work project but couldn’t come up with one original thought. Maybe it’s a lack of motivation, or discipline or understanding. Maybe it’s a lack of healing, where you know you need to move on, but you just can’t seem to get past that one thing. Big or small, lack seems to find itself waiting around every corner, ready to “fill” the void. Pouncing at the opportunity to steal your focus, to dig a hole in your thoughts and bury you in self-pity, envy, or just simply disappointment. It’s there, you may not see it today, but it’s all around you.

Recently everywhere I turned this one four letter word came popping up. Every book I opened, every podcast I listened to, every verse I read…there it was. Unavoidable. I began taking an account of all the areas in my life that I felt like I was lacking. From finances to relationships to disconnected emotions to loss of memory to compassion; it was there and I had come to accept it as the norm. But the more I read and studied the more I found that it was not God I was waiting on to answer my begging pleas to “fix” my problems, but rather my thoughts and words to line up with what He says is already my true identity and inheritance. He was calling me to know Him more fully-the only real solution to all of our lacking.

So… I did what I usually do when I need a good reminding and I put up a million sticky-notes. Yep, I put sticky notes all around my house, in my car, in my office and on my computer. Reminders of truth. Reminders of what I needed to be fixing my thoughts on and speaking out daily. Not prayers so much as declarations of what God has already established as a natural cause and effect in His Word. His promises are like natural laws, like gravity, cause and effect-when you implement them there is a natural effect/reaction to that cause. So I started declaring them every day, all throughout the day. And a few days ago, I finally saw breakthrough. It started one day with a financial breakthrough, then came with an opportunity, and then another opportunity. Increase in areas I had felt stagnant or lacking. Breakthrough where I felt stalled or blockaded. And it’s just the beginning.

There are promises all throughout the Bible related to this one word “lack”. Promises that are pretty motivating if you read a bunch of them together.

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” Hosea 4:6

“A ruler who lacks understanding is a great oppressor…” Proverbs 28:16

“…For the lack of justice there is waste…” Proverbs 13:23

“As a ring of gold in a swines snount, so is a lovely woman who lacks discretion.” Proverbs 11:22

“…Fools die for lack of wisdom.” Proverbs 10:21

“He will die for lack of self-control…” Proverbs 5:23

Destroyed, cruel, wasteful, foolish, death, death… I think you get the picture. If these are promises that the Word says take place when I lack in areas, it got me asking the question, ‘how do I not lack?‘  No magic potion or spiritual voodoo conjuring up a 1, 2, 3 step program to get all that I want, but rather what did the Word say about not lacking, or being deficient in any area of my life?

Those who trust in the Lord will lack NO GOOD THING.” Psalms 34:10

“The Lord is my shepherd; I have ALL THAT I NEED… my cup overflows with blessings, surely GOODNESS and UNFAILING LOVE will pursue me all the days of my life.” Psalms 23:1

My God shall supply ALL MY NEEDS, according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” 2 Corinthians 9:8

So how do we avoid the negative lacking and walk in our God-given inheritance of abundance, increase and NO LACK? Well in James 1:5-6 he says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting…”

It’s that simple. Just ask and ask in faith knowing who you’re asking. Don’t doubt that your Father wants to supply “ALL of your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus“. If you lack opportunity, ask Him. If you lack creativity, ask Him. If you lack friends, ask Him. If you lack finances, ask Him. If you lack healing, ask Him. If you lack understanding, ask Him. If you lack ____________…ask Him!

That is our promise. but we must ask.

Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy.” John 16:24

Here’s the kicker-the reason we get stuck on the asking-often it’s our own thoughts and words that keep us from asking. We don’t think it could be as simple as asking and we have no idea how life altering our thoughts are in deterring our mouth from speaking truth. If you’ve followed Jesus very long, you know that words have the power to speak life or death. If you haven’t or don’t follow Jesus you probably know this still to be true. Scientifically it’s been proven that positive thoughts can alter your life. They can alter your physical health as well as your mental disposition and attitude toward life. If you’ve ever been around someone going through deep depression or anxiety or just a stressful season in life you know that their words can seem toxic, but their words are only flowing from the toxic thoughts controlling their life in this season. Vital to asking God for what we lack, is actually lining up our thoughts with His truth so that our every word lines up with truth. Or as Philippians 4:8 tells us “...I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse...”

Beause it’s “…out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks…” (Luke 6:45) “So above all else, guard your heart, for it determines the course of your life.” (Proverbs 4:23) If we don’t guard our hearts and they become offended, bitter, resentful, full of unforgiveness, doubt, fear, etc., then our thoughts will swirl around these same subjects, and it won’t be long before our mouths will be dripping with toxic words infiltrating the atmosphere around us. Every word we speak is establishing something, good or evil.  Job 22:28 says “You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you…” and with every word we are establishing life or death for our future and destiny. We are agreeing with God’s truth or agreeing with the our adversary. We are deciding in every moment of every day, with every thought we think and every word we speak, where our future will lead us.

One of the best examples of this is in a book I’m reading that talks about the Israelites and why they ended up wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. It says, “the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness for 40 years and died, not because they were lost, but because they legislated their wandering exile with their own mouths. Because of their capricious, negative, and ungrateful chatter, they ignorantly altered their destiny from a journey that should have lasted approximately a fortnight to one of forty years….they believed in their own minds that they were as grasshoppers before giants-they were unable to fulfill God’s call… they were forced to wander homeless until the next generation rose up bold enough to take possession and move in.” (Commanding Your Morning by Cindy Trimm)

A few days ago my breakthrough came. It came quickly and unexpectedly after several weeks of putting into practice declaring God’s truth about my life and that I lack no good thing.  I believe as I continue to declare life and truth daily that I am establishing life and God’s reality for my future. I’m literally claiming and declaring God’s reality and His Kingdom coming to earth in and through my life in every situation every day. It partly came through financial provision, but primarily where God is meeting places of lack in my life are internal. It came in the form of opportunity. Opportunity for growth. Opportunity for promotion. Opportunity for more business. Opportunity for financial increase. Which then led to increase in encouragment. Increase in hope. Increase in confidence. Increase in rest. Increase in ideas. Increase in creativity. Increase in territory. Increase in knowing Him and who He is. Increase in trusting His heart. Increase in compassion for others and sharing His heart…

So to wrap up in this incredibly long post..I write this to you and to myself…instead of staring at all you may feel you are lacking and letting lack have it’s way in your mind and your heart and then pouring out death into your words… Stop. Take a deep breath. Close your eyes and remind yourself that you have a Father you can trust and He withholds NO GOOD THING from those who walk uprightly. Start asking for what you need and start declaring it to life every day!
